Choosing the Right Rug Size for Every Room
Rug sizing rules for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms — and why going bigger is usually the right call.

A rug that’s too small is one of the most common styling mistakes. It makes furniture look disconnected and a room feel smaller. These guidelines will help you size up with confidence.
Living room
The goal is to connect the seating area. Common approaches:
- All legs on: the rug is large enough for all furniture to sit fully on it. Best for large, open rooms.
- Front legs on: the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug. This works in most living rooms and is the easiest to get right.
For a typical living room, an 8×10 ft rug is often a better choice than a 5×8.
Bedroom
Under a queen bed, a 8×10 ft rug placed horizontally leaves soft landing space on both sides. For a king, consider 9×12 ft. Alternatively, use a pair of runners along each side of the bed.
Dining room
Chairs should stay on the rug even when pulled out. Add about 24 inches to each side of the table’s dimensions to find the minimum rug size.
Leave a border
In most rooms, leave 12–18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. This frames the rug and keeps the room from feeling wall-to-wall carpeted.
When in doubt, go one size up — you’ll rarely regret it.
